LOL vs. LOL

Baby boomers vs. X/Y geners.... When I first started using acronyms in email and texts msgs I actually thought LOL was LOTS OF LOVE. If you could imagine I was so confused the first six months (I'm slow) of communication with friends and work colleagues. So, when do you know it is LAUGH OUT LOUD or LOTS OF LOVE?
